Soulmate Check
A common theme of talk most of my girl friends and I have very often is the soulmate talk. The single ones ask about how to spot that soulmate. The committed ones are wondering if they are with their soulmates. The married ones are worried if they chose the right one. These questions are very reasonable and most importantly very relatable. We have all had such doubts.
So how do we know if someone is our soulmate? Thats a pretty herculean package to unload in a single post. But there is one simple trick which could possibly help, if you are in the beginning of a relationship. Very simple. Here goes :
If you think you both are very similar and it seems like you are made out of the same mould….. time for an intervention! Because you are infatuated. You are in that dangerous point where you think your “soulmate” is just perfect and everything he/she says or does is made of gold. At this point, you either recalibrate yourself to see the other person for who he/she really is or pack up your stuff and execute your exit strategy.
If you think you both are polar opposites who attract like iron and magnet, forget it! This is where there are just too many differences and that adds few extra layers of issue to the relationship. If you are ready to work on these ( on top of all the other compromises that come with being in any relationship ), go for it, or else realise that there are more than a billion more fish in the sea and around 50% of them are available and just move on with you head held high.
Now, if you are confused because you both seem to have a weird mix of similarities and an equally strong mix of differences, I think you kind of hit the soulmate jackpot. They say the person who has enough similarities with you so as to make you comfortable but enough differences to challenge you and introduce new experiences, would most probably be a soulmate.
I used “a” soulmate instead of “the” because despite popular belief, I think you can have several soulmates. Not just your life partner, maybe one of your friends ( maybe more than one of your friends ), someone from your family or maybe some random person you meet accidentally and feel an instant connection with ( not necessarily romantic ).
