If I say it was a wonderful week, it would be a serious understatement. It was beyond wonderful, in fact it was far from words could ever explain. It was the reunion of friends after a few loonnng years, it was the perfect amalgamation of love, laughter and giggles, it was an opportunity to refresh old memories and create a million new ones and among many others, it was the celebration of a wonderful marriage. And this was all thanks to the beautiful bride and the other fabulous bridesmaids who made every moment an occasion to cherish.
I really did not know what exactly to write about in this particular post mostly because I have not done anything like this before. So I am going to just let it flow the way it comes to me, hoping you will love it.
I had never attended an Indian Christian wedding before, let alone be a bridesmaid. It was my first time and I loved it!!!! After all the pre-wedding preparations, we finally reached the bride’s house on the day of the engagement, which was a week before the wedding. From there on it was a week filled with festivities. We were a band of around ten girls shopping, talking, travelling, partying, dancing, doing makeup, helping each other, having costume trials and doing some unspeakable stuff all day and all night for seven days in a row. It was all so jam-packed that there was hardly anytime to think about how fast it was all happening.
Jeeva, our bride was literally the captain of a pirate ship filled with chaos and confusion. She did lose it a few times ( I’m surprised that it was only “a few” times, given the kind of “situations” we constantly pulled on her ) but she was always the sweet little bundle of joy that she always has been. Her sisters being brilliant choreographers helped us sail smoothly through the uncountable number of songs and dances we performed over the days. Her family…. well let me just say that it was more like our family than her family.
Over the days we lost our makeup, we found our makeup, we lost our phone chargers, became charge thiefs sucking charge out of other peoples open chargers, we misplaced our jewellery, we were ripped off by rickshaw drivers, had life-threatening midnight encouters, strenuous waits in boutiques, never-ending hunt for typical Kerala food, drives to Fort Kochi, dance offs and singing competitions in the middle of the night ( much to the displeasure of our 10F neighbours ), fights with tailors and of course our 24x7 discussion of world politics a.k.a. gossiping.
I have to say that between all of this fun, there are some seemingly serious duties that every bridesmaid should definitely know about. I learnt it by the end but I hope you are equipped with them before-hand. Here they go :
❤︎ The bride ALWAYS has the last say ( If she says she wants you to wear a clown costume and juggle three oranges, you learn how to do it and DO IT! ).
❤︎ Whenever there is an event and the bride is on stage, keep checking her for possible wardrobe malfunctions and fix it ASAP ( or else you bear the burn when the photos come out ).
❤︎ Check in with the bride every once an hour to make sure she is all comfy while on stage ( we do not want a fainting bride at any point of time).
❤︎ Never back out of the bridesmaids’ dance. NEVER! ( Not even if you have two left feet )
❤︎ Make sure you talk to everyone you know at the wedding( even if you have seen them only once, in a crowded supermarket ). Entertainment is every bridesmaids motto.
❤︎ Please do not add to the family’s duties by pulling tantrums, it is not your day, it is theirs’ so let them have it.
❤︎ Be super good to the photographers ( that is if you do not want to look like a washed up druggie in the pics ).
❤︎ Don’t forget those wedding selfies ( Checkout this link for more ).
❤︎ Oh yeah, keep smiling and enjoy her big day.
So here is to Jeeva and Arun and their families for putting up with our trivialties. A special thank you to my fellow partners in crime Maria, Arya, Kamala, Jeny, Jeena and Chinnu, it would never have been the same without each and everyone of you. Love you, miss you. Meet again soon. Until then.
P.S. Don’t forget to subscribe and keep in touch.
