Hair 101 : Adding to your everyday hair care

Hey guys!

This is so exciting that Tress Fest has finally begun….. This is the first post for you all. It is a baseline post to help get some of our most basic hair care mistakes right.

We begin by first checking out our basic hair type using the picture below and then you can scroll down and get yourself some fab tips that you can use everyday to get awesome hair for your particular hair type ( because each hair type literally screams for its own unique hair care regimen ).

Before beginning, I have to confess that the picture below only shows the very basic hair types, if you would like me to go in-depth, please leave it as a comment below and I will try and include it as part of Tress Fest!

Lets begin without delay. Checkout the image below and see which category you hair belongs to.

Now that you know your hair type, lets scroll down and get all of those fab tips so that your hair looks its best everyday, with just slight changes in your everyday routine.

Wash often - Yours is the only hair type that allows for frequent washes. In fact, if you leave your hair unwashed for long it would go limp with all the natural oils that are secreted.

Condition only the tips - Your hair is rich in natural oils. So, adding more oil to the roots through a conditioner would weigh down the hair and make it dull.

Do not sleep with wet hair - Its difficult for straight hair to get that natural bounce if you sleep on it wet. Plus, it tends to get kinks and bends in all the wrong places which will then have to be corrected with heat styling ( which defeats the purpose of straight hair ).

Upside-Down blow-dry : Blowdrying your hair upside down helps lift the roots and hence makes your hair look thicker and more luscious.

Life-saver products :

❤︎ A kick-ass mild shampoo for those frequent washes

❤︎ A volumising mousse to give your hair that extra volume and bounce

❤︎ A light texturising spray to help give more dimension and texture to the hair

❤︎ A medium hold-shine spray to hold your curls and updos and add a glossy sheen to your style.

Shampoo Secret - Use a lightweight shampoo that will cleanse but not weigh down your hair or stretch out those beautiful waves.

Towel Trick - Use a microfibre towel or a t-shirt instead of the your everyday towel. This is where your frizz fighting journey begins, so switch to better choices right from this step.

Chuck the brush - Brushes tend to upset your natural waves so stay away from paddle brushes. Switch to wide-toothed combs ( or if you are keen on using brushes, use vented brushes ).

Silicone the saviour - I generally do not endorse chemicals. But since I am a wavy hair girl myself, I have to swear by the effectiveness of silicones in making my hair shine. My tip would be to try and pick out a leave-in conditioner with silicones in it.

Straight + Curly - Since wavy hair could lean either towards the straight or curly ways, I would recommend you check out those sections depending on which your hair resembles the most.

Life-saver products :

❤︎ Wide-toothed comb.

❤︎ Anything frizz-control ( from shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, heat protectant, hairspray )

❤︎ A kick-ass water based cream leave-in ( with silicones for extra shine )

Towel Trick - Never pull on your hair with your towel. Dab, dab and dab away all the moisture. Switch to a microfibre towel or a t-shirt, it helps a lot in controlling frizz.

Chuck the brush - Brushes tend to upset your waves so stay away from paddle brushes. Switch to wide-toothed combs.

Moisture mania - Lock in the moisture with a leave in oil ( like moroccan or argan oil ). This seals the hair cuticle and inhibits humidity from entering and creating frizz.

Gym condition - Apply conditioner on your hair when you gym. The heat produced by your body will help absorb all the moisture in the conditioner, leaving you with awesomely soft, nourished hair.

Satin princess - Sleep on satin pillowcases as cotton tends to absorb moisture from your hair and make it frizzy.

Life-saver products :

❤︎ Wide-toothed comb

❤︎ A moisture-rich kick-ass conditioner

❤︎ Moisture mask

❤︎ Leave-in oil

❤︎ Satin pillowcases

No more sulphates - Throw away all those products which has SLS and ALS. It strips your hair off moisture. You can definitely do better than those :)

Towel Trick - Never pull on your hair. Dab, dab and dab away all the moisture. Switch to a microfibre towel or a t-shirt, it helps a lot in controlling frizz. Try plopping. Its fun and works well with frizz control.

Chuck the brush - Brushes tend to upset your hair texture so stay away from all brushes. Switch to wide-toothed combs.

Deep condition - Atleast once a week, this is an SOS call! ( And try to avoid heat at all costs )

Moisture mania - Lock in moisture with a leave in oil ( like moroccan or argan oil ). This seals the hair cuticle and inhibits humidity from entering and creating frizz. Its all about moisture retention when it comes to your hair. So, help yourself by using moisturising products in every step of your hair care routine.

Satin princess - Sleep on satin pillowcases as cotton tends to absorb moisture from your hair and make it frizzy.

Life-saver products :

❤︎ Wide-toothed comb

❤︎ Deep-moisture mask

❤︎ Leave-in oil
